CHEM 248 Medical Organic Chemistry I

This course is the first term of a two-term medical organic chemistry sequence designed to meet requirements for students interested in a pre-med program. The preparation, characterization and reactions of the various functional classes of organic compounds are discussed and correlated with the theoretical principles underlying organic reactions. The laboratory portion is used to develop basic organic laboratory techniques and to incorporate instrumental techniques such as infrared, nuclear magnetic resonance and gas chromatography. At least one semester of a college-level general chemistry sequence is recommended.
