DHYG 216 Oral Care for People Living with Special Needs

Individuals living with special needs may have a higher risk of oral disease due to compromised oral hygiene as a consequence of their impairment, oral manifestations of their particular condition and/or the side effects of drug regimes.  This course will explore the concerns for providing and enabling the delivery of oral care for those people whose medical, physical, psychological, developmental, intellectual or social conditions may make it necessary to modify procedures in order to provide dental hygiene treatment for that individual. This course will address the dental hygiene process of care in developing and implementing provisions of multidisciplinary oral health care for a wide variety of patients living with special needs.   This course will include effective communication techniques and describe an interdisciplinary and interprofessional approach to establishing a comprehensive and coordinated approach to oral care for individuals living with special needs.
