Workforce Development

Academic Calendar

Most Workforce Development courses are shorter than a full semester. Our schedule of classes is listed separately for each course. Our schedule is frequently updated to reflect new course offerings. The most up-to-date listing of our courses’ schedules can be found at https://www.hvcc.edu/programs/workforce-development/index.html

Refund Policy

The request for a refund must be submitted in writing. E-mail is acceptable. All refunds will be in the form of a check. Refunds typically take 14 to 21 days to be processed.

Courses may be canceled due to insufficient enrollment. Every effort will be made to notify students of cancellations and full refunds will be made if a class is cancelled.

Refund/Cancellation Schedule

Courses nine weeks or more:

Prior to first class: 100% refund
During first week of classes: 75% refund
During second week of classes: 50% refund
During third week of classes: 25% refund
After third week of classes: no refund

Courses eight weeks or less:

Prior to first class: 100% refund
During first week of classes: 25% refund
After first week of classes: no refund

Enrollment Dates

Students may enroll in Workforce classes up to one week prior to the first class. For online classes, allow an additional week to set up a college computer account.

Grading Policy

All Workforce courses are Pass/Fail based on instructor’s criteria. Factors that can contribute to grades include tests, quizzes, hands-on projects, attendance, class participation, and task performance. Students who do not complete a course receive a grade of Fail. They may take the course over again the next time it is offered, at full price. Workforce courses are listed on a student’s official HVCC transcript, but do not compute in the GPA.

Tuition and Fees

Each Workforce course description lists its own tuition, expenses for books and tools (if applicable) and fees. Other college fees are not assessed.

Facilities

Workforce Development courses use the same classrooms and laboratories that other degree courses use. Workforce has no facilities of our own.

Courses

Aviation Maintenance Technician

This 2040-hour course runs for 60 weeks, eight hours per day five days a week. The course provides the knowledge and experience to take the Federal Aviation Administration’s FAR Part 147 written, oral and practical exams. A student who successfully completes all three exams becomes a certificated (licensed) Aircraft Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic.

By completing the course, you will understand:

Delivery of Course:
In-person classroom and lab. Students must be able to lift 50 pounds, have sufficient manual dexterity to operate hand and power tools, and be able to climb on, under and inside aircraft.

Schedule:
Sixty weeks, five days per week, eight hours per day. Holidays and college vacations are off.

BPI Building Analyst – Online

This course is designed to provide you with the necessary knowledge and skills to obtain the Building Analyst certification from the Building Performance Institute. The fully online content includes lectures, videos and other resources to help you understand and evaluate the building science components of the home. The House-As-A-System concept is taught with an emphasis on health and safety.

You will be introduced to diagnostic techniques and tests that are used to analyze the performance of a home and how to use this knowledge to reduce energy use and increase comfort and health.

This course consists of approximately 20 hours of online instruction.

By completing the course, you will understand:
Basics of Building Science
Interaction between the thermal and pressure boundaries
BPI standards and Task Knowledge Lists to understand audit requirements

This course is designed to provide you with the necessary knowledge and skills to obtain both the Building Analyst and Envelope Professional certifications from the Building Performance Institute. The fully online content includes lectures, videos and other resources to help you understand and evaluate the building and its components, as well as the importance of pressure and thermal boundaries and their treatment. The House-As-A-System concept is taught with an emphasis on health and safety.

This course is for those looking to provide required energy code testing and certification of new construction.

You will learn the knowledge and skills needed to conduct duct leakage and blower door tests in compliance with IECC and New York State building codes. Training consists of interactive classroom sessions that cover basic building science, energy codes and testing processes and standards. You will also learn how to analyze the results of blower door and duct leakage tests and determine reporting requirements.

This course consists of approximately 11 hours of online instruction.

You will learn to understand how building systems work together to keep a home healthy, and where breakdowns can occur.

BPI Certification/Recertification Field Exam Review

This training/review session will help prepare the student for the Building Performance Institute’s Field Exam. Participants will receive one-on-one, hands-on training. The training will cover the proper use of equipment utilized in the completion of home energy efficiency assessments. This is a preparatory review session, not a BPI certification exam.

The Field Exam Review is a great way for trainees to gain additional hands-on practice with the testing equipment and develop a stronger understanding of the process of analyzing a home.

To prepare for the Field Exam Review, the candidate should review documents and materials pertinent to the Field Exam and contact the instructor with any questions or clarifications they may have. The candidate is expected to provide the following items for the review session:

Personal Protective Equipment (Clean Bag)

A copy of the “Field Guide in Walk-Through Order” document for the certification being pursued (from student training manual or BPI website).

Notepad and pen/pencil

Tape Measure

Calculator

Proper set up and use of home diagnostic equipment in order to prepare for the BPI Field Exam

BPI Testing Information:
Following completion of this review session, participants will be better prepared to take any of the BPI Field Exams. The cost of the Field Exam is not included in the review session fee. Hudson Valley Community College, as a BPI Test Center, will conduct BPI field certification testing on an individual basis. Candidates should contact the college’s Workforce Development at the number(s) below to register and make arrangements for their Field Exam. Field testing is available for Building Analyst, Envelope Professional, Heating Professional and AC Heat Pump (Cooling).

Prerequisites:
This testing is for individuals who need to take their initial Field Exam for BPI certification.
OR
This testing is for individuals who have been previously certified by BPI and need to renew their certification requirements.

Time Allowed (Per Exam): 
In accordance with BPI standards (normally two hours)

Prerequisites:
This testing is for individuals who need to take their initial written/online exam for BPI certification.

NABCEP PV-Associate Exam

Hudson Valley Community College is a registered provider of the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners’ (NABCEP) PV Associate Exam for those who successfully complete an approved PV-Associate course.

Passing the exam and earning the NABCEP Associate Certificate is a way for candidates to demonstrate that they have achieved a basic knowledge of the fundamental principles of the application, design, installation and operation of grid-tied and stand-alone PV Systems.

By passing this industry-sponsored Associate Exam, individuals may find that their employment opportunities in the solar energy field are enhanced, especially as the market for solar power grows, since they will be starting the job with an understanding of the basic terms and operational aspects of a PV system.

The NABCEP PV-Associate Exam should not be confused with the NABCEP PV Installers Exam. Passing the NABCEP PV-Associate Exam does not qualify individuals as NABCEP-Certified PV Installers, who are required to pass a much more rigorous examination and to demonstrate the capability to supervise complete PV system installations. This course can be used to complete the Photovoltaic Systems Certificate.

PV-Advanced Solar Power Systems with Installer Workshop

PV-Advanced is designed for individuals who are preparing for the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) PV Installer certification process. The course follows the NABCEP Study Guide for Photovoltaic System Installers, and includes both theory and hands-on experience.

The course curriculum covers the following major job/task areas:
Working Safely with Photovoltaic Systems
Conducting a Site Assessment
Selecting a System Design
Adapting the Mechanical Design
Adapting the Electrical Design
Installing Subsystems and Components at the Site
Performing a System Checkout and Inspection
Maintaining and Troubleshooting a System

The Installer Workshop provides hands-on experience in the basic processes, equipment, system checks and tools required for installing a roof-mounted solar panel array, and includes the following:

PV Systems Checks: Identify PV components and use measurement devices to determine system performance.
Sizing PV Arrays: Determine the size of the solar array required for the project.
PV Energy Calculation: Determine the energy generated and how it relates to the NYSERDA application process to secure rebate funds.
Roof Mount Systems: How to mount, wire and ground solar panels for a roof project.

This course can be used to complete the Photovoltaic Systems Certificate.

PV-Associate (Solar Power) Online

This online version of the PV-Associate Photovoltaics (Solar Power) course covers the fundamentals of photovoltaic (PV) systems design and installation.

The objective of the course is to prepare students for the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) PV Associate Exam. The course curriculum complies with NABCEP’s Job Task Analysis for the Associate exam.

PV-Associate (Solar Power) Blended

The PV-Associate Photovoltaics (Solar Power) course covers the fundamentals of photovoltaic (PV) systems design and installation.

The objective of the course is to prepare students for taking the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) PV Associate Exam.

The course curriculum complies with NABCEP’s Job Task Analysis for the Associate exam.

As an introduction to Solar Energy, students will learn to safely and effectively perform installation tasks as a trained, entry-level worker does in the field.

Pharmacy Technician - Online/Remote or In Person

Pharmacy technicians are in great demand both locally and nationally and credentialed technicians have a solid career path. The role of the pharmacy technician is to dispense medications, interact with patients and many may soon be administering COVID 19 tests and vaccines. This is an exciting opportunity to enter a high-demand medical field.

This course provides students the preparation needed for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board’s (PTCB.org) exam. There is an increasing demand from pharmacies for those who have passed the certification exam. Coursework focuses on the retail pharmacy industry and emphasizes the importance of customer service. Those who wish to work in hospital or veterinary pharmacies will generally receive additional on-the-job training specific to those environments.

This course is conducted exclusively online to provide you with the flexibility to learn on your own schedule. You will have access to the instructor and you will participate in discussion boards with fellow students. All students also are required to attend two mandatory three-hour synchronous (real time) remote classes per week with the instructor.

Water Treatment Plant Grade I - Advanced Operations

The Water Treatment Plant Grade I - Advanced Operations course is one of the modules required by the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) to become certified as a Grade IA or Grade IB water treatment plant operator in New York State; (the second module is on Management and Supervision and is a separate course). The Grade IA certificate is required at water treatment plants with filtration that were designed for 2.5 MGD and over. The Grade IB is required for water treatment plants that are designed for 2.5 MGD or over, without filtration.

There is also a 10-year experience requirement for the certification. Generally the course is taken by those operators already possessing a Grade IIA or Grade IIB water operator certificate. The course is an in-depth course in water treatment, with a heavy emphasis on math, chemistry, biology, the intricacies of water treatment, water treatment plant optimization and the rules, regulations and legal requirements of operating a water treatment plant.

Note: For NYSDOH-approved water treatment courses, 100 percent attendance is required. In order to satisfactorily complete the course, students who miss any hours of the class will be required to make up those hours by arrangement with the instructor.

Water Treatment Plant Operator Grade A/B

This course covers the practices and processes involved in the operation of a modern water treatment plant. Topics covered will include, but not be limited to, legal requirements, chemistry, hydraulics, laboratory analyses, coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration and disinfection. The course meets minimal New York State Department of Health training requirements for certification as either a IIA or IIB water treatment plant operator. Tuition includes materials but does not include the required textbooks.

Note: For NYSDOH approved water treatment courses, 100 percent attendance is required. In order to satisfactorily complete the course, students who miss any hours of the class will be required to make up those hours by arrangement with the instructor(s). A Validated Examination will be given as part of the course.

Prerequisites:
Strong math and science skills recommended

Per Subpart 5-4 of Chapter 1 of the State Sanitary Code, to receive NYSDOH certification as a IIA operator, one (1) year of operating experience at a water treatment plant with facilities for filtration and for a IIB operator, one (1) year operating experience at a water treatment plant, is required.

These courses cover the practices and processes involved in the operation of a modern waste water treatment plant. Courses are focused on Basic Operations Course, Basic Laboratory Course, and Grades 1, 1A, 2, 2A, 3, 3A, 4 and 4A. Topics covered will include, legal requirements, chemistry, hydraulics, activated sludge, laboratory analyses, sedimentation, filtration and disinfection. The course meets minimal New York State Department of Environmental Conservation training requirements for certification as specific to each course.

Note: For NYSDEC approved water treatment courses, 100 percent attendance is required. In order to satisfactorily complete the course, students who miss any hours of the class will be required to make up those hours by arrangement with the instructor(s). A Validated Examination will be given as part of the course.
